Lenten Evening Series: Telling our Stories—
Lenten Reflections on how we have been shaped as Christians

Thursday Evenings, February 23 - March 29, 2012, 5:30 - 7:00 p.m.
Lent is a time of self-examination and introspection, often including memories of various people and stories that have shaped us as Christians.  But do we take the time to share these stories with our loved ones?  And do we take the time to ask our loved ones about their stories?  This Lent, please join as we explore our stories through various lenses that will reveal different facets of our spiritual lives.  Each session will offer practical guidance for recording parts of your stories, if you choose to create a record for your family and friends.

  • February 23: The Bible and Our Stories

We are thrilled to welcome the Rev. Marek Zabriskie from the Center for Biblical Studies.  Marek+ will share his experiences reading through the Bible and invite us to remember the Bible stories that shape our lives.

  • March 1: How did I get here from there? Spiritual Autobiographies as one way to tell our stories

Our gifted EfM mentors—Frances Sullinger, Joni Langevoort, and Norma Williamson—will talk about the power of creating spiritual autobiographies and show us very easy and practical ways to document our walks in faith.  For a copy of the handout describing different types of spiritual autobiographies, click here:

  • March 8: Literature, Film, and Our Stories

Using the tools of literature can assist us in the holy endeavor of examining our stories.  Please join special guest David Fikes+ as we examine how traditional methods of literary analysis—plot, character, perspective and theme—can be applied to our life stories with surprising and oft-insightful results. For a copy of the handout, click here.

  • March 15: Our Parish’s Story and Our Stories

How have Holy Comforter and other parishes (of any denomination) shaped your spiritual story?  The communities that support us have a profound impact on our walks with God.  Please join Mother Libby+ as we explore some of the major events in the history of Holy Comforter and reflect on their impact on our stories. For a copy of the handout, click here.

  • March 22: How do we respond when stories feel chaotic?

At different times in our lives, we or our loved ones may feel confused, disappointed, lost, or otherwise hurt by God and our family or friends.  How do we respond when stories are chaotic and don’t seem to have happy endings? Mother Libby+ will share various perspectives on bearing witness to stories of lament and tragedy.

  • March 29: Stories of Healing from the End-of-Life

When looking back over their lives, many hospice patients see patterns and sources of wisdom not previously visible.  Please join Mary Baylor, pastoral care nurse at the National Cathedral and former Hospice nurse, as she shares insights from people at the end-of-life.

Easter Devotional Booklet, available on Palm Sunday

Parishioners at Holy Comforter write reflections for the fifty days of the Easter season, reflecting on how we live our resurrection faith.  We compile them in a booklet and offer it to you as a way to extend your Easter experience.  The booklets will be available in the church on April 1, 2012 and will be posted here.
