Holy Comforter is gearing up to host our one-week Hypothermia Prevention Shelter from Sunday, February 23 to Sunday, March 1. In partnership with FACETS, our Ministry Center will host 30+ guests who live and work without a home. During the coldest days of winter, our parish will provide a warm place to sleep, nourishing meals, conversation, and prayer.

In addition, our shelter will offer much needed personal supplies (toothpaste/brushes, socks, soap/shampoo, etc.), Smart Trip cards, gasoline cards, and provide entertainment such as music, games, books and magazines.

Here's how you can help:

Sign up online to volunteer HERE. Download Volunteer Position Descriptions.

For volunteers providing breakfasts:

Download Breakfast Menus and Recipes.

  • For each breakfast service, we are seeking two individuals/groups to prepare breakfast—recipes will need to be doubled per individual/group to support all our guests. Please note, Friday’s breakfast is store-bought breakfast sandwiches for those who don’t wish to cook but would like to provide a meal.

For volunteers providing dinners:

Download Dinner Menus and Recipes.

  • For each dinner service, we are seeking two individuals/groups to prepare meals—recipes will need to be doubled per individual/group to support all our guests.

For FACETS van drivers and those serving riders:

For those who have agreed to drive our guests in the FACETS van, please complete the following forms and send them to Mark Schmitt.

A training session for volunteers will be held on Sunday, February 16 from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. in the Ministry Center. We will be joined by Michael Dykes, Hypothermia Site Coordinator, Case Manager for FACETS. He will be providing an overview of the shelter policies, the role of the FACETS staff who will be onsite during our week-long shelter, and background information on guests. In addition, we will review specific volunteer job descriptions, daily schedules, and procedures. All volunteers must complete a FACETS volunteer form and confidentiality agreement.

PLEASE NOTE: For those who have provided travel-size personal supplies—thank you for your incredible generosity. We have plenty of supplies for our guests, so we will stop taking donations at this time.

Donate Supplies:

Our Faith in Action Sunday School class is sponsoring a drive to collect gently used winter clothing for our Hypothermia Prevention Shelter guests. We will be collecting:

  • Winter clothing: gently used coats, scarves, mittens, gloves, hats, and socks (adult sizes)

Please leave your donations in the bins at the Hypothermia Shelter table in the narthex by Sunday, February 16. Questions? Contact Alex Graham or Susan McGuire or check out the flyer HERE.

Donate Funds:

A $20 donation from each family or individual in our parish is needed to help guests with Metro Smart Trip cards, fuel cards, and take-away lunches for the seven days while they are in our care. Many may not realize that several of our guests are employed and need help getting to their jobs. Donate $20 online today HERE! Select "Hypothermia Shelter."
