Zoom Book Study: Jesus and the Disinherited by Howard Thurman

Mondays in August
7:30 PM – 8:45 PM

Jesus and the DisinheritedWe'll gather on Zoom on Monday nights in August to discuss the 1949 book, Jesus and the Disinherited, by African-American theologian and civil rights leader Howard Thurman. In the book, Thurman interprets the life of Jesus as an experience of a marginalized and oppressed person examining nonviolent responses to injustice and a greater spiritual vision that results in a reciprocal community. We will also be exploring many of his writings on spirituality and prayer which are incredibly relevant and transformative.

For the first session on Monday, August 3, please read the Forward; Preface; and Chapter 1, Jesus: An Interpretation. For each subsequent session, we will study each subsequent chapter with some supplemental reading, poems, and writings of Howard Thurman and additional texts.

  • August 10 - Chapter 2, Fear
  • August 17 - Chapter 3, Deception
  • August 24 - Chapter 4, Hatred
  • August 31 - Love

For the supplemental materials for this discussion, please request them via email to the Rev. Jon Strand. Many of these materials will be read in the context of the class.
