2021 FACETS Hypothermia Shelter

February 2127, 2021
8508 Leesburg Pike
Vienna, VA 22180
Driving Directions

Please mark your calendar for February 21–27. The annual Hypothermia Shelter Program is one of the most successful public-private partnerships between Fairfax County, FACETS, and faith-based partners. Each year this life saving mission provides our most vulnerable neighbors with a warm place to stay, three meals per day, and access to health and community services.

Due to the pandemic, FACETS (and Fairfax County) is hosting all guests at one location: 8508 Leesburg Pike, Vienna, Virginia. This is the former Container Store location at Tysons Corner.

The shelter will be open to guests 24 hours a day. The shelter is serving approximately 60 guests and the need is growing daily as economic impact of the pandemic and the cold weather set in. FACETS is striving for a contactless experience to keep guests and volunteers safe from infection.

For 2021, Holy Comforter will be partnering with Bethlehem Lutheran Church and the Jewish Community Center of Fairfax to support the guests with delivered meals and supplies. Holy Comforter will be responsible for preparing the hot dinner for the week of February 21–27. The other faith-based organizations have breakfast and lunch covered.

Here’s how you can help:

  • Meal Preparation - working in teams, volunteers are needed to prepare a hot meal that will be delivered each afternoon to the shelter location at Tyson’s Corner. Main courses can be made in advance and frozen. Each course of the meal: entrée, side/salad, bread, dessert, MUST be individually wrapped for distribution. “To-Go style packaging” will be provided and assembly will take place in the kitchen of Holy Comforter’s Ministry Center. To sign up to prepare a meal, please use this link: MEAL PREP.
  • Meal and Supply Transportation - Each day during our week, Holy Comforter will need two (2) teams of two (2) individuals to deliver the prepared meals and collected supplies to the shelter location. Volunteers must provide a vehicle that can transport 3–4 large coolers for food transport. Deliveries will be met by FACETS staff at the shelter location. To sign up to work deliveries, please use this link: DELIVERIES.
  • A $20 donation from each family or individual in our parish is needed to help guests with Metro Smart Trip Cards, Fuel Cards, and for the packing supplies to support the hot meals we are provided each night. Donate $20 today through Online Gifts/Payments on the Holy Comforter website (select "Hypothermia Shelter" from the Fund dropdown menu).
  • Personal Care Items are needed such as travel size toothpaste, bodywash, shampoo, conditioner, lip balm, lotion, and combs/brushes. Personal care items can be dropped off in a box just inside the entrance to the Church Office. Travel size items can be found stores such as Bed, Bath and Beyond and CVS.

More details will follow in the weeks ahead including meal menus, updates, and a Zoom orientation and training for volunteers. If you have any questions, please contact Alex Graham.
