Millennium Development Goals

Extreme poverty means not having enough food to feed your family, not having clean water or sanitation, watching your child die from preventable, treatable diseases like malaria or HIV/AIDS.

In the year 2000, the countries of the world promised that they would no longer tolerate having billions of their fellow human beings in this condition, and that they would take action to significantly reduce extreme poverty.  The result was eight Millennium Development Goals, with specific, measurable objectives to raise people out of poverty.  Read about the background, the goals and the progress, here.
