Student Ministries
The Junior and Senior High youth at Holy Comforter are involved in every aspect of parish life, from worship to education to fellowship to mission. Our youth programs involve three elements: Faith Formation, Mission Formation, and Community Formation.
Faith Formation
As full members of the church, young people have the opportunity to wrestle with their faith and proclaim it as their own through many kinds of activities. Sunday School, Confirmation, diocesan retreats to Shrine Mont, pilgrimages, discussions and worship together at youth group meetings give us an opportunity to engage with Christian tradition and take hold of it as our own.
Mission Formation
As full members of the church, young people are called to put their faith into practice. This can be as simple as making sandwiches together for the Lamb Center, or as involving as going on a mission trip to Honduras. Our youth have recently raised money for various charities and traveled to the Mississippi Gulf Coast to help with the rebuilding effort after Hurricane Katrina. Our faith takes its most concrete form where the rubber meets the road: mission.
Community Formation
As full members of the church, young people need the support and friendship of their peers and neighbors. Forming community means learning to be together in a way that builds up everyone, despite our differences in sex, age, color, or perspective. We form community through activities that bring people together to have fun: ski trips, retreats, mission trips, movie nights, whitewater rafting, camping, concerts…the list goes on.
Summer Camps
The Diocese of Virginia offers a wide variety of different summer camps at Shrine Mont, in the mountains of Virginia west of Harrisonburg. Many Holy Comforter youth have enjoyed this time away from home with friends! The diocese also offers urban work-camp experiences.
