Adult Christian Formation
We, the people of God at the Church of the Holy Comforter, are committed to live and journey together as followers of Christ through worship, discipleship, and mission. We use the words 'Christian formation' because we think there is an important difference between education and formation. Education tends to be "head knowledge," but when you are formed in faith, your whole life is shaped by God. Our task is to find ways to help the men and women of Holy Comforter, and the surrounding community, encounter the living God and grow in the knowledge and love of this God.
All adults are invited . . .
-
To Deepen your relationship with God,
-
To Live life more fully,
-
To Learn more about the Bible and your faith,
-
To Connect with others on the journey,
-
To Participate in God's transformative vision for your life
In 2005-2006, we began to offer a new “Foundation” class, for people new to Holy Comforter or to the Episcopal or Anglican tradition, and to all who want to deepen their faith and understanding of what it means to be a disciple and follower of Christ.
Additional Adult Christian Formation opportunities include:
-
Sunday Morning Adult Forum Discipleship Groups
-
Holy Comforter’s Discipleship Groups are small safe communities where members study scripture, learn, pray, laugh, cry, support each other, and journey together as followers of Christ. This fall the groups will be studying the Gospel of John. They meet at the Church at various times. Several have room for more members, and new groups are being formed.
-
A distance learning program from the University of the South (Sewanee), assumes that bringing Christ to the world lies in a Church empowered by an active, theologically articulate laity. The study plunges participants into the Bible, Christian heritage and theological thought, deepening faith and building confidence for carrying out day-to-day Christian ministry. Through shared theological reflection, participants seek to understand how their beliefs influence the events and movements of their lives. A brief worship period is included in each session.
Encounter with God
-
Many Holy Comforter parishioners find following the four spiritual practices of regular worship, prayer, scripture study and service to others to be important part of their spiritual growth. The Encounter with God series provides daily readings and thoughtful commentary, and is available at the Adult Christian Formation table.
