Episcopal Church Women
Are you a woman at Holy Comforter? If so, then you’re a member of The Episcopal Church Women! The purpose of our ECW is to unite the women of Holy Comforter in a program of worship, study, service, discussion, and fellowship. All ECW programs are open to all women of the parish. We are a lively and vibrant group of women of all ages, committed to making a difference in the world we live in.
Pennywise Thrift Shop
ECW activities are primarily funded through Pennywise Thrift Shop, which is staffed by volunteer men, women, teens, and children of our parish and provides affordable clothing, toys, books, and home accessories to the community. The consignment department is open Wednesday through Friday from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM and the second Saturday of each month from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
The Cloister Shop
The Cloister Shop, staffed by ECW volunteers and located in McGill Hall, is a gift store open during Sunday morning coffee hour. Bibles, prayer books, children’s storybooks, jewelry, seasonal items, greeting cards, and all manner of Christian gifts are available at cost. The Cloister Shop often carries books being used for various Christian Formation classes or mentioned in sermons, so check there first when shopping for spiritual reading material.
What does the ECW do?
Two-thirds of the ECW budget supports activities within our parish, including such activities as the Altar Guild, the nursery, coffee hour, St. Clotilda’s Guild and the Church Library. ECW also provides funds for scholarships for children and teenagers who attend Christian summer camps or mission trips, as well as scholarships to attend the Holy Comforter preschool.
Approximately one-third of the ECW budget is targeted to mission and outreach projects outside our parish. Some, such as The Shepherd’s Center and The Committee for Helping Others (CHO) are local, while others, including Five Talents and Hope for Humanity (Sudan) reach out to our neighbors across the globe. More information on these projecsts can be found in the “Missions” section of the website.
During the holiday season, the ECW sponsors several Christmas projects, such as stockings for the Salvation Army, and gifts for Bethany House and Northern Virginia Family Services. Additionally, the ECW sponsors the yearly United Thank Offering (UTO), which collects funds for worthy local and global projects.
