"6 Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? 7Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover them, and not to hide yourself from your own kin?" - Isaiah 58

Lent begins on February 6, and the Ash Wednesday reading reminds us of the fast that the prophet Isaiah says is important… "to share your bread with the hungry…"

Every day 800 million people go to bed hungry.  The Millennium Development Goals seek to put an end to this kind of extreme poverty – the poverty that kills.

As a Lenten discipline, pray that the Holy Spirit will lead you ways to address the needs of the extremely poor – through prayer, learning, giving, and advocating for the poor.  Pick up a copy of Seeking to Serve, a Lenten devotional guide published by Episcopal Relief and Development, at the Peace & Justice display.
