World Refugee Day

June 20, 2026

Every year on this day, attention is focused on the plight of the over 42 million refugees worldwide. The theme for this year is "Solidarity with Refugees.” As Christians, we are called to engage in God’s mission of reconciliation.

Holy Comforter serves displaced people living in our community through the Refugee Ministry, begun in 2021 when thousands of Afghans arrived in America. At that time, we embraced Jesus’ call to welcome the stranger by reaching out to support two Afghan families and, later, an unaccompanied Afghan youth. Since then, our mission has expanded to included four more families. Thanks to donations of time, items, and funds, we have helped them find and furnish homes, provided used cars, and assisted in a myriad of other ways. We have been blessed to get to know these individuals through accompanying them on appointments to doctors and dentists, helping with schooling, job hunting and legal issues, and sharing meals. And most recently we rejoiced in the birth of a baby boy and are now awaiting the birth of two more babies, one in June and one in July. These families are our friends.

HOW TO HELP:

This ministry does not have an established budget. Funds are raised as needed. Prayerfully consider a contribution to this ministry by check or online below (Select “Refugee Ministry” in the drop-down menu.)

The adults and teens in these families are either working or looking for work, but finding gainful employment at this time is challenging. If you know of any jobs, or could use help around the house with manual labor, lawn and garden work — or if you have a used car to donate — please contact the Church Office.

Most importantly, if you feel called to serve on this ministry, please contact a representative of the Refugee Ministry or the Outreach Committee (see back of church worship bulletin), or the Rev. Jon Strand.

“Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? (38) When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? … (40) The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’” – Matthew 25:37–40
